This spring the Lower Eastside Girls Club photography students used disposable Kodak cameras to complete weekly assignments for The Girl Project. Each week girls were challenged to use just 27 frames to share their point of view on a particular subject, always relating to their community and female adolescence. Applying the same principals as the national photography documentary by artist Kate Engelbrecht, girls used photography as a way to communicate their ideas, experiences and self-perceptions.

ART+COMMUNITY GALLERY at The Lower Eastside Girls Club represents artists from diverse and often overlooked communities. Art+Community is one of a trio of social venture programs run by the Girls Club- the others being our Sweet Things Bake Shop and La Tiendita: Fair Trade and Girl Made Giftshop. All three programs provide job-training and jobs for low income girls and women living in Lower Manhattan.
