New Initiatives
2018–2028
So much work to do, so little time!
The Lower Eastside Girls Club has a number of new initiatives planned for the coming decade. Here is a sneak peek of our present and future:
New Girl City: Agents of Change
New Girl City is our city-wide five-borough girls leadership program, funded by the NYC Council Women’s Caucus and the NYC Council Speaker. Officially launched on The International Day of the Girl, October 11, 2018!
New Girl City / Re-Start Academy for 8th Grade Girls
Working in partnership with the NYC Department of Education, we are designing a school for 8sup>th</sup grade girls in need of stronger academic and social supports. Planned opening in early 2020.
Center for Wellbeing & Happiness
The Girls Club is in the process of purchasing and renovating the former Rite-Aid space on Avenue D, turning it into a real wellness center. Classes in nutrition, stress reduction, yoga, child raising, and much more will be offered to our community at no cost — because we can no longer afford to get sick.
La Tiendita
La Tiendita is now located at the new Essex Market, in Booth 39! La Tiendita sells our “Girl Made and Fair Trade” goods and also serves as an entrepreneurial training program which trains and employs high school girls, college students and Lower East Side moms.
Campaign HQ
A GALA Girls project. Campaign HQ is a Gift Shop, Gallery and Gathering Space designed and run by community teens. Campaign HQ is located in our former bakery site at 136 Avenue C, NYC.
