2nd Annual Lower Eastside Girls Club Walk-a-thon

Walk for Girls' and Women's Health

May 15, 2010

What is the Walk-a-thon?

REGISTER TODAY for the 2nd Annual Lower Eastside Girls Club Walk-a-thon for Girls' and Women's Health, a 5K walk-a-thon through the East Village to raise awareness of girls and women's health issues and funds to support the Lower Eastside Girls Club. This event is family-friendly! Husbands, brothers and kids welcome too.

When is the Walk-a-thon?

The Walk-a-thon will take place on Saturday May 15, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., in lower Manhattan, and will end with a finish line Block Party and health fair sponsored by Beth Israel at 1st Street Park, East 1st Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. The walk will kick off at the PS 20 playground on Essex Street between Houston and Stanton Streets. Registration will be from 9:00am to 10:00am.

What if it rains?

If it is drizzling, we will go forward with the event. If it is pouring, we will re-schedule the event to September 2010. Captains and team members will be emailed the morning of the event by 8am if there is potential that we will have to reschedule to the rain date.

Where is the Walk-a-thon?

The walk will kick off at the PS 20 playground on Essex Street between Houston and Stanton Streets, loop around the Lower East Side and up Avenue B, over to the East River, past the land where we are building our new building, through the East Village to 2nd Avenue, down to the finish line at the Girls Club on East 1st Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues.  We will be passing several sites and organizations that are significant to the Lower East Side and East Village community.

Why walk?

100% of funds raised through the event will support Girls Club health and nutrition programs for economically disadvantaged girls and young women. Each $2,500 raised supports a full year of programming for one girl; $1,500 supports school year programming; and $1,000 supports intensive summer programming. These include: "Bloom" environmental education, nutrition, physical fitness and gardening programs for girls ages 8-12; "Girls Gone Green" environmental justice and nutrition education initiatives for High School students ages 13-18; and an array of other community health and nutrition initiatives (Farmers Market, dance and physical fitness classes, healthy cooking and eating workshops, and family friendly programs.) The costs of the Walk-a-thon will be covered by corporate sponsors including NYU and Beth Israel.

How do I get involved?

There are several ways you can participate in the Walk-a-thon:

  • Event Sponsor: Any company or organization can sponsor part of the event or a team. Sponsors can support the finish line celebration, participant t-shirts, water bottles, kick-off refreshments, etc. We are also seeking media sponsorships. Download the event sponsorship info here.
  • Team Captain: Sign up here! Team captains recruit at least 10 friends, co-workers, relatives, neighbors and acquaintances, each of whom raises at least $100, to walk together, so that each team will raise a minimum of $1,000. Each team will be paired with a Girls Club member “co-captain.” Various college student and alumni groups are also participating. Teams will compete for prizes in several categories, including: most members, most funds raised, best costumes, widest age spread (babies to grannies), and most spirited. The first Team Captain event will take place on Tuesday March 23rd. @ the Girls Club, 56 E. 1st Street. Email Sierra to RSVP.
  • Team Member: Sign up here! Team members are responsible for raising $100. We encourage participants to raise this amount through donations of $10 (or more) from at least 10 friends. Several teams will be open to all, so people can join these teams to participate as individuals or in groups smaller than 10.
  • "Angels:" Angels are Team Captains who have the time and interest to become more deeply involved in the Walk-a-thon. Angels can give approximately 10 hours per month in one of the following areas: press/marketing, sponsorships, or events logistics. Email Sierra for more info.
