As you can imagine, COVID-19 and its effects are putting the health, well-being and safety of our members at risk — many who have lost their safe spaces. The Girls Club is a parallel family, a lifeline, a place where girls grow physically, mentally and emotionally, and they need us now more than ever.

In response to COVID-19, we are:

  • Providing short-term cash infusions for non-food necessities
  • Sourcing produce from local organic farms, and distributing food and takeout meals for families of 4+
  • Sending books, art supplies, computers and sewing machines to members
  • Daily check-ins from staff, assessing the needs of each family
  • Providing online mentoring, tutoring and resources
  • Providing homemade masks and cleaning supplies
  • Running a ‘virtual’ online Girls Club to enable our staff to continue to teach classes and provide safe social spaces for our members

That’s why fundraising is more critical than ever and simply canceling our annual Gala is not an option. Resiliency is a key life skill we teach the girls, so we’re doing just that and adapting to the times. We are excited to announce that we are developing a series of virtual content! This year, we are celebrating our girls, our work, our community and YOU —our supporters.

Even though we are continuing to serve girls and their families during this crisis, we need your help to make sure the Girls Club survives when life returns to normal.

The Future:
Center for Wellbeing & Happiness

The health and wellness of our members have always been a focal point of our mission, and we understand that the wellbeing of our girls is intimately connected to the wellbeing of her family, her community and her world. Long ago, we recognized the significant flaws of our existing health system, particularly the major disparity faced by black and brown people

Our community is burdened by high rates of pre-existing conditions due to lack of access to care, healthy foods, and resources, as well as systemic and existential stressors, so we set out to create a wellness space for all community members well before the COVID-19 crisis hit. Now that it is clear that the high fatality rates within black and Latinx communities are directly connected to the disproportionate rates of pre-existing conditions faced by our community, we feel the pressing need to move forward as soon as possible.

We recently acquired an additional 5,000 sq. ft. of space on Avenue D, adjacent to our existing Center for Community to open the Center for Wellbeing & Happiness, our new holistic and intergenerational education center. The Center will address the epidemic of non-communicable diseases, as well as the social, emotional, physical, mental and economic wellness issues facing our community. These services are vital as we begin the long road to recovery from this crisis.

About the Girls Club

The Lower Eastside Girls Club (LESGC) promotes sisterhood and social justice, empowers girls, strengthens families, and builds community through our mission to train the next generation of ethical, entrepreneurial and environmental leaders.

In our state-of-the-art center, LESGC members are offered, at no-cost to girls and their families, social justice and activism-grounded programs in the areas of the arts, STEM, entrepreneurship and wellness. Girls also receive college and career guidance, and internship and employment opportunities.

Girls Club members feel a sense of belonging and safety in an environment that sparks an interest in learning and bolsters girls’ self-confidence. Girls grow academically, develop meaningful connections with caring staff, mentors and professional role models, and cultivate their communication skills. Girls also develop leadership capacity by working collaboratively, speaking publicly, and advocating for themselves.
