The Lower Eastside Girls Club Saturday Performance Series, now in its second year, is a weekly afternoon performance series, open to the public, free-of-charge and featuring all-women line-ups of musicians, singer-songwriters, MC’s and poets. This project is dedicated to upholding the Girls Club’s mission of offering free and innovative cultural programming to Girls Club members, connecting the Girls Club to the greater community, and supporting women in the arts.
In case you missed a Saturday, each performance is recorded and pod-cast weekly from our own digital radio studio: Girls On Air-- check us out!
If you are a young woman interested in participating in the "VIP Lunch" Artist Q&A program before the show, a performer looking for a gig, or would like to be apart of our email list, email Caitlin Meissner for more information.

Marty McConnell, Rebecca Hart & Shanelle Gabriel with DJ Kamala!

Marty McConnell received her MFA in creative writing/poetry from Sarah Lawrence College, and competed in five National Poetry Slams with the NYC/louderARTS team. She co-founded the Chicago-based Morrigan, an all-female performance poetry troupe and currently co-curates the flagship reading series of the louderARTS Project, and appeared on both the second and fifth seasons of HBO's Def Poetry Jam, and performs nationwide with the Piper Jane Project.
Rebecca Hart - small girl, big voice, fast guitar - is a musician and actor based in NYC. She made her first stage appearance at nine months old and hasn't looked back. She is a graduate of Brown University's Theatre department and a survivor of the Los Angeles independent music scene. Rebeca tours frequently with her current band between acting jobs, most frequently on the East Coast and in Ireland. RH Live features members of the NY-area 'jam band' Licorice, and it sounds pretty damn cool.
Shanelle Gabriel is a 23-year-old spoken word and singing virtuoso. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY she has displayed her skills at colleges and venues across the country. She performed the Promo Opening and featured on 2007's sixth season of HBO's Def Poetry Jam and recorded a nationally televised promo for the 2007 NFL Draft. She also was a member of the 2006 Nuyorican Poets Cafe National Slam Team and a competitor in the 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam Competition in Vancouver, Canada.
DJ Kamala: While DJ Kamala is best known for her deep soulful house music sets, her musical ear and music programming covers many genres from nu-soul, global lounge, broken beats, trip hop, hip hop, dub, afrobeat, dance and soul classics, jazz, latin jazz and beyond. Kamala has been a featured DJ in the PS1 Warm Up DJ Series, Raindance/ Speigelworld events at Pier 17, the Winter Music Conference in Southbeach and dance parties presented by The Melting Pot NYC and Giant Step.

Martha Redbone, Jen Chapin & DJ Laylo

Martha Redbone: Singer/songwriter Martha Redbone has been described by Billboard Magazine's Larry Flick as "a true original; the kind of artist who sets trends, as opposed to following them". She grew up in New York and Kentucky. An unlikely combination that you can hear in her flow: the staccato melodies of the city, mixed with the easy, wide-open praise song of a country choir. Her debut CD "Home of the Brave" is summed up by Billboard in one word... "stunning".
Jen Chapin: In the two years since releasing her critically-acclaimed debut with Hybrid Recordings, LINGER, Jen Chapin has toured the East coast, West, South and Midwest, given TV performances ranging from the WB Morning News to Late Nite with Conan O'Brien, and given birth to a baby boy. Continuing the Chapin fame, Jen’s beautiful music prompted JazzTimes’ to anoint her "a first-rate storyteller.”
DJ Laylo's regular gig is holding down the 1’s and 2’s alongside Brazilian rapper LF (EliEfi.) On her down time, Laylo heal’s the people with good music, everything from old school Salsa to Hip Hop to Merengue to House to Soul to Funk. And if you mess around she might throw some Brazilian joints up in there too… proving that people can and will dance to something other than what’s on MTV!

Madafi & Christa Bell

Madafi: This singer/songwriter/poet and producer is bringing music and testimonials like the brothers and sisters of yesteryears with an eclectic mix of soul, ska, hip hop, and funk with songs. Her no holds barred storytelling about love and life will force the world to re-evaluate how they listen to music. Madafi has performed at Central Park's Summer Stage as well as the legendary Blue Note, and acted in the Walt Whitman play 'Crossing Brooklyn Ferry' at this year's Celebrate Brooklyn with Brave New World Repretory Theatre.
Christa Bell is an award-winning feminist folk poet, performance artist, and cultural activist from Seattle, Washington. A National Poetry Slam Champion, National Public Radio alumna and internationally touring artist, Bell’s work is crafted by combining the oral poetic and storytelling traditions of the Classical Black American Church with rhythmic elements of Hip-Hop and the body-centered awareness and transformative mission of women’s sacred ritual. Her work is an act of resistance towards the international corporately-sanctioned attack on women in mainstream hip-hop and mass media.
